Soil and Water Sciences Department chair receives textbook award

Dr. Matt Whiles, the chair of the UF/IFAS Soil and Water Sciences Department, is a recipient of the Textbook & Academic Authors Association (TAA) Textbook Excellence Award for 2020.

Textbook award of excellenceWhiles and co-author Dr. Walter Dodds won the award for Freshwater Ecology: Concepts and Environmental Applications of Limnology, 3rd edition. Dodds is a Professor in the Division of Biology at Kansas State University.

The judges called Freshwater Ecology an incredibly “comprehensive and flexible textbook” that could be used in different courses related to freshwater systems.

“[The book] moves beyond ecologically focused topics to provide in-depth detail on many of the physical factors and processes that affect the distribution and abundance of freshwater species,” the judges’ comments continued. “This textbook is able to link all physical and biological factors to real-world issues.”

The award will be presented during a ceremony at TAA’s 33rd Annual Textbook & Academic Authoring Conference in San Diego in June.

“As anyone who has written or updated a textbook knows, it is a tremendous amount of work,” Whiles said. “We are pleased to be recognized with this award of excellence from TAA.”

Academic Press is the publisher of Freshwater Ecology. It released the first edition in 2002 with a second edition out in 2010.
