Suwannee 4-H Seniors Set their Sights for Coveted State Positions

The date is August 2nd, 2017. Through sweat and tears, two Suwannee teenagers have worked hard to earn their spots on the Florida 4-H Council. With only a few moments before to go before the results, the two phenomenal teenagers question if their hard work will pay off. Will Kara Croft clinch the win to become Treasurer? Will Christian Rodriguez pull off a successful campaign to become Vice President?

Florida 4-H Executive Board

The Executive Board of the Florida 4-H Council is charged with supporting the programmatic efforts of the Florida 4-H Program. To do so, they operate with Comprised of five elected officers, three appointed officers, and four District representatives. These youth represent 4-H throughout the state at various outings and help plan 4-H specific events. These events and activities include Florida 4-H University, Florida 4-H Legislature, L.A.W. (Leadership Adventure Weekend), Intermediate State, and Florida 4-H Day at the Capitol.

In order to run for an elected position on the Florida 4-H Council, Kara and Christian had to apply, interview, and be chosen as representatives of Suwannee County. So, back at the beginning of 2017, the two teens were already planning ahead for an exhausting battle to the top. Once they were selected as representatives, they began to prepare their marketing materials. Kara decided to go with a minimalist approach by simply having “Croft – Treasurer” on her fliers.

Christian decided to use humor with various one liners on different posters. His personal favorite was “No need to fear, Christian is here” with his head on a superhero body. One of Christian’s more popular strategies was handing out tickets that invited people to vote for him, so that they felt as if it were a special occasion that they didn’t want to miss out on.

With marketing materials in hand, they made their way to 4-H University. Here, they took time to build relationships, give prepared speeches, and answer impromptu questions from their constituents. One voting delegate said that she was impressed with how interested Christian was in her as a person and not just a vote. Others said that Kara’s experience within Suwannee 4-H made them confident in her abilities to serve the Florida 4-H Council.

Election Results

So with only a few excruciating moments left, had Kara and Christian’s efforts been enough? On that day, Suwannee County became the proud home of two elected officers to the Florida 4-H Council. Throughout the next year, Kara will serve the council by caring for the monetary matters, and Christian will serve by assisting the President and the Council in whatever they need.
