New: Sea turtle book now available!

For every one thousand sea turtle eggs that hatch, only about one hatchling will survive to become an adult.

That sobering statistic provides the title for a new book about sea turtles. One in a Thousand: Those Amazing Sea Turtles is a new offering from the UF/IFAS Extension Bookstore. Drs. Maia McGuire, Ruth Francis-Floyd, Mark Flint and Jaylene Flint wrote this book to accompany a fifth grade sea turtle curriculum. With lavish illustrations by graphic artist Dawn Witherington, this book should appeal to a range of audiences.

Contents

Chapters in the book cover

  • the biology and ecology of sea turtles,
  • the seven different types of sea turtles,
  • the natural and human threats faced by these animals, and
  • ways that people are helping sea turtles to survive.

For educators, there is a series of lesson plans for each of the book’s ten chapters. These lesson plans are written for fifth grade. They cover Florida Sunshine State Standards. Lesson plans can be downloaded here.
