One of the most exciting parts of the 4-H experience is being recognized for your hard work. The 4-H Awards and Recognition program is designed to celebrate not just what youth accomplish, but how they grow along the way—through leadership, service, and personal development.
What Is 4-H Awards & Recognition?
4-H recognition goes beyond trophies or ribbons. It’s a system that highlights the many ways youth participate and succeed in the program. In fact, 4-H emphasizes recognizing young people for:
- Participation
- Progress toward goals
- Achieving standards of excellence
- Peer competition
- Cooperation and teamwork
Standards of Excellence
Members and 4-H Clubs can earn recognition by meeting specific benchmarks or performance standards. Performance standards make youth aware of the opportunities available in the 4-H program and to encourage members to become active participants.
These standards are designed to grow with the member, becoming more advanced at each age level to include such things as:
- Project exhibits
- Presentations
- Project Reports
- Service Projects
- 4-H Activities
- Leadership
Cloverbuds (ages 5-7, as of September 1) have the opportunity to earn a Clover Award by completing a show and tell, exhibiting something they made, completing at least one project book or workbook and completing a 4-H Cloverbud Project Summary.
Juniors have a tiered recognition system, Bronze, Silver, Gold clover Awards and Intermediates, Seniors, and 4-H Clubs may strive for Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Emerald Awards.
As members move through age divisions (Cloverbud, Junior, Intermediate, Senior), expectations increase. Youth are encouraged to:
- Participate in more activities
- Take on leadership roles
- Engage in community service
- Improve their project work each year
As you put together your Standards of Excellence this year, review the guidelines for each age group.
Why Recognition Matters in 4-H
Recognition isn’t just about awards—it plays a key role in positive youth development. When youth are recognized, they:
- Build confidence
- Feel a sense of belonging
- Stay motivated to try new things
- Develop pride in their accomplishments
4-H programs are intentionally designed to recognize effort and growth, helping youth see the value of their experiences—not just the final outcome. ()
Tips for 4-H Youth & Families
- Track your progress: Keep records of activities, leadership, and service.
- Try new opportunities: The more you participate, the more chances you have to be recognized.
- Focus on growth: Improvement matters just as much as achievement.
- Apply for awards: Don’t be afraid to submit applications—you’ve earned it!
4-H Awards and Recognition are about celebrating the full journey of a young person—not just the end result. Whether it’s completing a first project, leading a club activity, or giving back to the community, every step counts.
In 4-H, success isn’t just about winning. It is about growing.
