Breaking the Rules! ‘One Seed’ at a Time

Breaking the Rules- why just one when you can have three? Herbs, that is!

Okay- maybe we aren’t breaking a ‘rule’, but instead of just sharing one type of crop to grow – we are busting out a trio of herbs in our ‘One Seed’ packets this season! It was too hard to settle on just one herb- so you’ll get three herbs in one seed packet- dill, cilantro, and flat leaf parsley. AND this herb trio is not only great for you, but pollinators, too!

Did you know?

Our One Seed program provides a limited supply of seeds to our local Sarasota County libraries and our extension office. Typically, only one specific crop/food is featured each year, and we offer classes, blogs, and sometimes short videos all about the benefits of the crop, how to grow it, how to prepare and eat it, and more.

Why do we do have the One Seed program to share seeds to our community?

Frequently when people try to grow veg in Florida- they start with something like a tomato or cucumber and the season, or the soil is a bit off- and it makes it more challenging than it needs to be. Too often this results in folks giving up before they get a chance to enjoy edible gardening in Florida.

Hopefully the free One Seed packets, information, and learning opportunities entice folks to give edible gardening another chance- at nominal cost.

To make it appealing or accessible for a wide audience –we aim for crops that:

  • can fit in a container, a raised bed, your landscape bed, or your garden plot.
  • are beginner friendly
  • can be direct seeded, so people can sow the seed directly in the area they hope to grow the plant until harvest.
    •  This can be an easier approach than growing transplants where seeds are sown in small containers and then planted out as a seedling/start/transplant in the area where they will grow to maturity. Ex. Tomato and pepper plants typically are not direct seeded but put out as transplants, so we often don’t feature them because of the added steps and materials required.
  •  are versatile- preferably a food that can be used in a variety of ways.
    •  Last season our One Seed selection was Swiss chard and we loved its versatility in the kitchen as it could be enjoyed cooked or fresh and the flavor of the stem and the leaf had flavor nuances making it really feel like two plants in one.
  • are suitable for growing in Florida with a long enough planting season

Growing together, One Seed at a Time!

The herb trio is a combination of herbs that can be sown fall through very early spring in Florida.

People can enjoy sowing, growing, scouting, harvesting, preparing, eating these herbs and you are encouraged to reach out and share your experiences with us. During our One Seed classes- we encourage sharing how you like to grow food and, or eat food. So whether you are a new or experienced gardener or cook- there’s something to share and something to learn when we gather together to talk about One Seed. Since this season features more than one crop, maybe we’ll have triple the fun together!

Our One Seed packets are available in our lobby and some of our outreach events and will be out in your local libraries by early November. Don’t forget to check out our One Seed class at your local library, too. If you’ve grown some of these herbs or enjoy using them in dishes, your feedback is welcome in the comments or in the class. Remember to keep an eye out for more blogs about One Seed where we’ll dig in deeper about growing and enjoying these herbs.
