We’re hearing a lot about microplastics in the news, but what exactly are they and what can I do to reduce the impact of microplastics in our environment?
Well, first, what are they? Microplastics are defined as plastic particles no larger than 5 millimeters, or about 1/5 of an inch, according to Ask IFAS information.
These particles come in two forms: primary and secondary. Primary microplastics are designed to be small, and are often used to fill plush toys, some pillows or bean bags. Secondary microplastics result from the breakdown of larger plastics into tiny fragments. These secondary plastics do not biodegrade. Instead, they fragment, which results in pollution in our waterways.
So, what can we do when plastic is everywhere? Here are some simple ideas and suggestions:
- Cover leftovers with a plate or bowl instead of plastic wrap
- Store food in glass containers with lids or reusable wrappers
- Use sealable bags more than once
- Avoid individually wrapped items
- Invest in natural fiber napkins
- Microwave in glass or ceramic
- Purchase larger quantity and refill into smaller reuseable containers to avoid single serving packaging of foods
- Use silverware instead of plastic for table setting and utensils
- Use stainless steel reuseable water bottle instead of plastic bottles
- Create your own cleaning products with white vinegar, baking soda, etc.
- Look for bedding made of natural fibers like cotton & linen
- Invest in reusable fabric shopping bags for groceries and errands
- Choose clothing made from natural fibers such as cotton, hemp, linen and wool
- Read personal care product ingredient lists and look for plastic ingredients (polyethylene, etc.)
- Be more mindful of the daily resources you are using in your everyday life
