Learn to Compost with UF/IFAS

Starting in February, UF/ IFAS Sarasota County will be offering an “Introduction to Composting” class for residents looking to start composting in 2018. If you have a large amount of food waste that ends up in the trash can or feel like you should contribute less to the overall flood of waste headed to our landfills, this class is for you. If you have tried to compost before, but didn’t have much success, you may consider signing up for a refresher course. The classes will be offered in the evenings on February 8, March 7, April 4 or May 9. Register in advance at http://ufsarasotaext.eventbrite.com to save your seat.

This 90-minute workshop blends indoor lessons with outdoor, hands-on activities in our compost demonstration area. Designed for residents interested in learning about backyard composting, attendees will learn the basics of home composting, how to build your own compost system, and the benefits of composting. They also will gain an understanding of food waste isssues. and how our community is helping with the solution. While this course is geared to beginners, experienced composters are welcome.

So, how can you win a composting bin? Simple: attend the class. We’ll raffle off to attendees a select number of composting bins during the class. Make 2018 your year to start composting!

Instructor: Randall Penn, waste reduction agent, UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County
