Florida’s state bird is not the flamingo … at least, not yet!

If you scroll through social media this week, you might think Florida already has a brand new state bird. A lot of posts say the flamingo has officially taken the crown. But hold on. That is not true, yet!

So, the northern mockingbird is still Florida’s state bird?

Yes, the Florida House voted 112 to 1 to make the American flamingo the new state bird. They also voted to name the Florida scrub jay as the state songbird. But even though the House passed the bill, the Florida Senate has not done the same. The bill still needs to move through more Senate committees, and no hearings have been scheduled.

Until the Senate votes and the Governor signs it, nothing changes. Which means, the mockingbird is still our state bird.

Why is social media acting like the decision is final?

Probably because flamingos are fun, bright, and everywhere in Florida shops and signs. And honestly, it is exciting to see wildlife news getting attention. But this is a good reminder to slow down and check the facts.

Where can I learn more?
