Cheers and claps ring out as campers exit the stage, high-fiving and giddy with the kind of nervous excitement that always filled the air on talent show day.
The energy was enough to distract from the fact that it was the last day of camp.
Everyone gathered in front of the make-shift stage, and it felt like just another moment of summer, with all its messy, joyful chaos. As kids, it didn’t seem particularly important, but looking back, it was. It was small acts of courage quietly building confidence, big moments of bravery and stepping into the unknown, friendships and connections forged, and so much more.
The Invisible Toolbox
These moments didn’t stay at camp; they stayed with us as we grew, like tools in an invisible toolbox that we’re always carrying with us, sometimes without even realizing it. We reach for these tools when we need the courage to try something new, the ability to build relationships, and the confidence to move
forward even when we’re uncertain. It turns out there’s a science to these feelings.
Research now supports what many of us felt instinctively: that time spent outdoors, engaging in hands-on experiences, and building social connections gives us space to practice and develop skills such as problem-solving, emotional well-being, and resilience. Beyond that, it sparks creativity, regulates stress, and allows us to try new things in a supportive environment. Even though camp seems like a simple summer activity, it’s actually an incubator for building confidence that lasts.
The Lessons We Carry Home
As adults, we still access these tools. Have you ever stood in front of a group, unsure but willing? Have you felt a sense of belonging with a breath of fresh air? Have you been under the canopy of a tree and felt its energy melt away the stress of your day?
These memories, and the sensory experiences connected to them, became part of us.
This summer, a new group of kids will step into their own version of these moments at camp. They’ll sing songs together, plant seeds, move, play, and laugh. They’ll try new things and think “I did that!” with the realization that they are more capable than they ever thought.
They won’t call it resilience or emotional wellbeing. They’ll call it summer camp.
It will feel like just another fun summer, but moment by moment, they’ll be building a toolkit that stands the test of time, far beyond the last day of camp. This toolkit will travel with them through classrooms, friendships, challenges, and eventually into adulthood.
One day they’ll look back and realize it was so much more than just the end of another year at camp; it was the beginning of something lasting, and moments that helped shape who they’re becoming.
