Filing For Nursery Crop Insurance Tips

For members of the greenhouse & nursery production industry reeling from Hurricane Ian and in the process of cleaning up your businesses, here are a couple tips when it comes to crop insurance.

  • Do not remove or destroy any damaged plants from the nursery. If need be, take pictures of everything and leave them set aside in the nursery. Insurance experts suggest if you stand damaged trees back up to try and save them, flag those trees in case they die later.
  • If you have a loss, go through the entire loss process so you end up with a “percent of damage” – even if you do not have a payable loss. Losses are cumulative and (while hopefully not) you could have another loss later in the crop cycle, which could add to the current loss.

You will also want to calculate the percent of damage because this could help you when applying for any additional USDA funding that may become available later. It is always good to check with your crop insurance company about their requirements.
