Journey to more self-sufficient food production seminar

vegetable produceWould you like to grow more of your own food? If so, you may be interested in an upcoming gardening seminar being offered at the UF/IFAS Extension Office in Okaloosa County.

Karen Harper and Marg Stewart, Okaloosa County Master Gardeners, will present an amazing look into their quests to grow more of their own food during this one hour program titled “Journey to Become More Self-Sufficient in Food Production.”

This presentation will include Harper’s and Stewart’s personal experiences in growing fruit, vegetable and herb plants in their own backyards here in Northwest Florida. They will cover information on plants, seeds, containers, trellises, how to construct an inexpensive greenhouse and how to easily build raised beds for growing garden plants. They also will share the good, the bad and the ugly from their early gardening attempts.

With some experience and certainly with the right information, you can become more successful with growing some of your own food. You do not have to “reinvent the wheel” when it comes to growing edible crops for yourself and your family. Take advantage of the experiences of others as well as sound gardening information provided through the UF/IFAS Extension Office in your County. Add to this some personal time, experience (failures and successes) and patience, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming more self-sufficient in producing some of your own food.

This gardening seminar will be held at the Okaloosa County Extension Office from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 17th. The Extension Office is located at 3098 Airport Road in Crestview.

There is no cost to attend this seminar but space is limited so registration is required. Please call the UF/IFAS Okaloosa County Extension Office at (850) 689-5850 to register.
