Hurricane Irma’s effect on North Florida crops

North Florida peanut crops were left mostly untouched by the 70 mph winds from Monday’s (9/11/17) Hurricane Irma. With warmer than normal spring temperatures, many growers were already ahead of schedule for digging this year at around 125-130 days. UF/IFAS agricultural agents in each county continue to run maturity board samples to determine when is optimal for digging any particular crop. Even with 8-12 inches of rain in our area, our sandy soils dry out fast, so hopefully machinery can get peanuts inverted and combined with drier days ahead.
