UF/IFAS Suwannee Valley Agricultural Extension Center hosts Corn/Peanut Field Day

On Tuesday, July 18, the UF/IFAS Suwannee Valley Agricultural Extension Center hosted the annual Corn/Peanut Field Day in the newly renovated conference center and grounds of the center’s research farm in Live Oak, Fla.

During the event, nearly 50 attendees from throughout the Suwannee Valley region gathered to hear about the latest research and results obtained from studies and trials at the center, from Extension agents and cooperating university and industry professionals. The Field Day also included a trolley tour of the research farm, speakers, networking time, door prizes and an industry-sponsored dinner.

Featured speakers included Patrick Troy and Charles Barrett, UF/IFAS Suwannee Valley Extension Center regional specialized Extension agents; Joel Love, UF/IFAS educational specialist; Keith Wynn, UF/IFAS Hamilton County Extension agent; Chris Vann, UF/IFAS Lafayette County Extension agent; Nick DuFault, UF/IFAS plant pathologist; Barry Tillman, UF/IFAS North Florida Research and Education Center peanut breeder and Ben Broughton, UF/IFAS Suwannee Valley Extension Center farm manager.

Topics covered through their presentations included corn variety trials, irrigational water management, irrigation scheduling, a soil pit root examination, corn inputs and best management practices, disease management in row crops, peanut fungicides and cost share programs for Suwannee Basin producers. Vendors from agronomic companies were also on hand. Each attendee also received a folder full of supplemental information over the presented topics and helpful Extension publications related to corn and peanuts.

A majority of surveyed attendees indicated that they will use Best Management Practices tools and information presented at the Field Day in their future production. All attendees left with a sense of the good that the Suwannee Valley Agricultural Extension Center is doing to assist agricultural producers throughout the region and to further the mission of the UF/IFAS Florida Cooperative Extension Service.

The event was sponsored by the Florida Peanut Federation, Bayer Crop Science, Holder Ag Consulting, Southeast Ag Equipment, Southern Agri-Gro, Advanced Ag Solutions and Growers Mineral Solutions.
