The UF/IFAS Center for Public Issues Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources, in collaboration with Florida Extension Disaster Education Network, will host a virtual Lunch and Learn on Jun. 23, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. EST on Communicating Before, During, and After hurricanes. Effective communication is essential in disaster management, and knowing communication frameworks and approaches for operative messaging can make all the difference.
During this Lunch and Learn, Angie Lindsey, Family, Youth and Community Sciences Associate Professor and UF/IFAS Point of Contact for the Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN), will lead the discussion on practical strategies and tools for planning, developing, implementing, and assessing communication efforts across all phases of a disaster, including preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery.
“Effective communication across all levels of disaster management is essential to ensuring that disaster and crisis plans are implemented efficiently. Recognizing the importance of communication before, during, and after a disaster can help reduce impacts and support a faster recovery,” Lindsey said.
Participants will learn how to identify key audiences, select appropriate communication channels and craft messages that are clear, timely and credible. The session also addresses how to work effectively with media, stakeholders and community partners during high-pressure situations when misinformation can spread quickly. About the Presenter:
Angela B. Lindsey is an associate professor in the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences working within the PIE Center. She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Agricultural Education and Communication at the University of Florida in May 2013. Prior to her current position, Lindsey was a post-doctoral associate with the PIE Center, serving as the community outreach and dissemination core manager for the Healthy Gulf, Healthy Communities project. She currently serves as a point of contact for the Florida Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) and is the immediate past chair of the Extension Disaster Education Network.
