About: As backyard poultry continues to grow in popularity, UF/IFAS Extension Wakulla County is hosting a Beginning Backyard Poultry Workshop on Thursday, April 30, to help beginners learn how to raise chickens safely and successfully.

“Getting hens to have egg production is not as easy as getting chicks and raising them,” said  Robert Jones, county Extension director for UF/IFAS Gadsden County. “Having backyard poultry flocks requires planning and preparation to ensure your chicks grow into happy healthy hens!”

Attendees will learn essentials including poultry care, nutrition, predator prevention, biosecurity and local regulations taught by Jones.

To attend, pre-registration and payment of a $15 fee is required by visiting the Eventbrite link. Registration by Wednesday, April 22, ensures each attendee receives a free copy of the UF/IFAS book Raising Backyard Chickens for Eggs.

“This is about education, but it’s also about engaging with our community in a fun way,” said Clayton Bania, county Extension director for UF/IFAS Wakulla County. “We hope you’ll join and help us spread some eggducation about poultry raising in Wakulla County.”

The workshop offers a great opportunity to directly engage with local UF/IFAS Extension experts whether attendees are just starting out with learning the basic skills for candling eggs or wanting to dive deeper into more advanced topics.
