UF/IFAS staff, faculty, students win major prizes at ASABE awards

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The UF/IFAS Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering won several high honors at the recent annual meeting of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in New Orleans. They are as follows:

 

Eric McLamore received 2015 ASABE Young Educator Award for his outstanding accomplishments in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and for introduction of new ideas in agricultural and biological engineering curriculum at the University of Florida.

 

Rafael Muñoz-Carpena has been inducted as a Fellow of ASABE and received 2015 ADS/Handcor Soil and Water Engineering Award for outstanding research, extension and education contributions in the development and advancement of integrated hydrologic and water quality modeling. In addition, Muñoz-Carpena has been recognized by the President of ASABE for providing leadership as Co-Chair of 1-st Climate Change Symposium: Adaptation and Mitigation, which took place in May 2015 in Chicago.

 

Associate Extension Dean (ABE faculty) – Dr. Saqib Muhtar was recognized as a co-author of an extension publication that won 2015 Educational Aids Blue Ribbon Award.

 

Kati Migliacio was elected to the ASABE Board of Trustees and will serve until 2018.

 

Max Wallace (ABE master’s student) is the recipient of the 2015 Roger R. and Laura M. Yoerger Preprofessional Engineer of the Year Award in recognition of his outstanding scholastic achievements, leadership skills and involvement in engineering projects, the community and ASABE. In addition, Wallace received a third place in 2015 Barnes Student Paper Awards competition. The top three papers will be posted on the ASABE website.

 

Another ABE graduate student, Nathan Holt, won the Boyd-Scott Graduate Research Award for his master’s research.

 

The ABE’s undergraduate students won the Frist Prize at the 2015 Fountain Wars after hosting a great Southeast Rally this spring at UF. ASABE has been conducting Fountain Wars Design Competition since 2003. It is a hands-on, real-time design competition where students design and model their entry on-site at the Annual International Meeting (AIM), and build and test their actual entry under time pressure during the competition at the AIM.
