GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A University of Florida student has been selected to serve on the national board of directors for Alpha Gamma Rho agriculture fraternity.

Okeechobee native Jack Cowen, a junior majoring in agricultural and biological engineering at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, is one of four undergraduate directors named to the board in March. He began serving a one-year term of office April 1.

“I’m honored to be selected to serve on the board, and it’s great to have an opportunity to give back to the fraternity that has helped me so much,” said Cowen, who is also the current president of UF’s Alpha Gamma Rho chapter.

On the board, Cowen will help represent the fraternity’s undergraduate members. He will attend national meetings and is eligible to serve on task forces and committees.

Cowen was the only UF student named to the board this year. In the selection process, each of the fraternity’s 67 chapters nationwide was invited to nominate one member who displayed outstanding leadership skills. Once nominated, Cowen submitted an application and letters of recommendation; he was selected for the position by permanent members of the board.

After graduating next May, Cowen plans to pursue a career in land and water resources engineering. He has been a member of Alpha Gamma Rho for three years; his brother Jake, an animal science senior, is also a member.

The Cowen family has deep roots at UF – Jack’s mother, father and grandfather all earned degrees in agricultural disciplines; his father is also an Alpha Gamma Rho member.
