GAINESVILLE, Fla.—V. Alaric Sample, president of the Pinchot Institute for Conservation in Washington, D.C., will speak April 23 at the University of Florida’s John Gray Distinguished Lecture Series at the Sheraton Gainesville Hotel. The topic of his 10 a.m. presentation is “Private Forests, Public Value and Emerging Capital Markets.”

Sample’s lecture, which is free and open to the public, keynotes the 34th annual symposium for the Florida Division of the Society of American Foresters. Hosted by UF’s School of Forest Resources and Conservation, the symposium begins April 23 at 8 a.m. and concludes April 24 at noon.

In addition to serving as president of the Pinchot Institute since 1995, Sample is a fellow of the Society of American Foresters and a research affiliate on the faculty at Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. His professional experience spans public, private and nonprofit organizations, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service, Champion International paper company, The Wilderness Society and the Prince of Thurn und Taxis in Bavaria, Germany.

Sample also specialized in resource economics and national forest policy as a senior fellow at the Conservation Foundation in Washington, D.C., and as vice president for research at the American Forestry Association.

He has served on national task forces and commissions, including the President’s Commission on Environmental Quality Task Force on Biodiversity on Private Lands and as co-chair of the National Commission on Science for Sustainable Forestry. Other professional activities include serving as chair of the National Capital Society of American Foresters and as chair of the board of directors for the Forest Stewards Guild.

Sample earned his doctorate in resource policy and economics from Yale University in 1989. He holds master’s degrees in business administration and forestry from Yale and a bachelor’s degree in forest resource management from the University of Montana.

The lecture series was established in 1994 to recognize Gray who served as director of the UF forestry school from 1963 to 1977. He developed outstanding research and teaching programs that have served as models for other universities.

Wayne Smith, director of the UF forestry school, said Gray’s leadership included development of programs in forest biology, wildlife and range sciences, fisheries, outdoor recreational resource management and cooperative programs with USDA, members of the Florida Forestry Association, Florida Division of Forestry as well as the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Fish and Wildlife Service.

“For his many excellent services and outstanding leadership, John’s friends and associates established the John Gray Fund for Excellence in Forest Resources and Conservation to focus on issues pertaining to forests and other natural resources,” Smith said.
