GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Water and Florida Citrus, a new comprehensive guide published by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, provides growers, grove managers, technicians and irrigation specialists with detailed information on a wide range of water management topics.

“The 603-page book with color photos includes 39 chapters and 14 appendices that provide citrus growers with much of the information required to design, operate and maintain water management systems,” said Brian Boman, an associate professor at UF’s Indian River Research and Education Center in Fort Pierce and editor of the book.

Included are discussions on the physiological aspects of excess water and drought stress on citrus, sources of supply, environmental and regulatory concerns, economic evaluations, and best management practices to minimize off-site effects of citrus production on the quality and quantity of water in receiving water bodies.

Other topics include soil-plant relationships; drainage and water table management; basic hydraulics; water measurement equipment and techniques; and pump and power unit selection, operation and maintenance.

Detailed sections on microirrigation system operation and maintenance, such as emitter selection, water filtration, valve selection and operation, control systems and emitter clogging, are also included, he said.

Water and Florida Citrus (SP281 priced at $30 plus appropriate local Florida tax and $4 shipping charge) is available from the IFAS-Extension Bookstore at UF in Gainesville. Order via telephone with MasterCard or Visa 1-800-226-1764; FAX (352) 392-2628. http://IFASBOOKS.UFL.EDU
