GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Charles Sims, professor and interim chair of the University of Florida’s food science and human nutrition department, has been named chair of the department, effective July 1.

Sims, who joined the UF faculty in 1986, has served as interim chair of the department since January 2001. He also was interim assistant dean of UF’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences from 1999 to 2000.

He replaces Douglas Archer, professor who served as chair of the department from 1994 to 2001. Archer is now conducting teaching, research and extension in the department, primarily in the area of food safety.

In announcing the new appointment, Mike Martin, UF vice president for agriculture and natural resources, said Sims is highly qualified for the position.

“We are fortunate to have a faculty member available with such a wide range of teaching, research and extension experience,” Martin said. “Charles Sims is highly respected by the faculty, and he has many years of outstanding service in UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. It’s always a pleasure to promote faculty who have made outstanding contributions to the organization over many years.”

Sims’ research interests include fruit and vegetable processing and quality, and sensory analysis of foods. He also teaches courses in food science.

A native of Arkansas, Sims obtained his degrees from the University of Arkansas, including a bachelor’s degree in 1980, master’s degree in 1982 and doctorate in 1986.
