GAINESVILLE – There is still time to sign up for fall semester distance education courses from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The deadline for sending in pre-registration forms has been extended to Friday, Aug. 22.

Catalogs and a web site describing the fall courses are still available, along with information on enrollment and fees. To obtain a free catalog, contact Mike Harrington, UF/IFAS educational coordinator, by phone at (352) 392-1773; by fax at (352) 392-9248; or by e-mail at mtha@gnv.ifas.ufl.edu. The web site address is .

UF/IFAS distance education courses offered for the fall semester include: Computer Technologies in Agriculture and Natural Resource Management, Writing for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Food and the Environment, Man’s Food, and Fundamentals of Human Nutrition.

Distance education courses allow people with job or family obligations to take courses at their convenience. Location doesn’t matter, since courses can be delivered to the home by either Internet or videotape.

“The value of our distance education program is that it gives people an opportunity to take courses in food, agriculture and natural resources not available from other institutions,” says Jimmy Cheek, UF/IFAS assistant dean for academic programs.

The courses may also count toward teacher certification or recertification, he says.
