Composting is a big hit in Nassau County! People are excited to recycle their food scraps, cardboard, and yard waste. Below are pictures and information. The next Therm n’ Worm Compost & Learn Composting Workshop is scheduled for June 7th, 2025
Making Worm Bins
Attendees assemble worm bins out of 5-gal buckets and “no-see-um” mesh toppers at the Spring workshop – the mesh topper is important. You don’t want flies ending up in your compost!
Afterwards, participants are given instructions to take care of their bin.
- How to add spent coffee grounds to your worm bin – 35 sec.
- How to add eggshells to your worm bin – 34 sec.
Worm Bin Care:
- Keep your bin out of direct sunlight.
- Add pulverized eggshells to help worms healthy.
- Add cardboard to soak up excess leachate and liquid and reduce foul odors.
- Always use mesh topper to prevent pests.
- Red wiggler worms (Eisenia fetida/andrei) utilized in the bins. You can see a cocoon forming in the center. Cocoons will hatch into new worms.

Your Ticket Includes:
- Worm bin with mesh topper
- Premium pine flakes. (Decompose quickly, mix well, and distribute moisture evenly)
- Hardwire cage to hold ingredients
- Pallet (upon request) keeps outdoor piles elevated
Composting with cowpea effectively utilizes the pine flakes, cage, and pallet (included with ticket purchase). Learn more here.
