Composting Workshops in Nassau County, FL

Composting is a big hit in Nassau County! People are excited to recycle their food scraps, cardboard, and yard waste. Below are pictures and information. The next Therm n’ Worm Compost & Learn Composting Workshop is scheduled for June 7th, 2025

Making Worm Bins

Attendees assemble worm bins out of 5-gal buckets and “no-see-um” mesh toppers at the Spring workshop – the mesh topper is important. You don’t want flies ending up in your compost!

Afterwards, participants are given instructions to take care of their bin.

Worm Bin Care:

  1. Keep your bin out of direct sunlight.
  2. Add pulverized eggshells to help worms healthy.
  3. Add cardboard to soak up excess leachate and liquid and reduce foul odors.
  4. Always use mesh topper to prevent pests.
  5. Red wiggler worms (Eisenia fetida/andrei) utilized in the bins. You can see a cocoon forming in the center. Cocoons will hatch into new worms.
