Nassau 4-H Receives State Recognition

This year at the University of Florida’s Extension Professional Association of Florida conference in August, Nassau County received very special recognition.

Mrs. Wanda Simmons was awarded the State Friend of 4-H Award distinguishing her 29 years of service to 4-H. Mrs. Simmons was accompanied by her husband and presented the award by Dr. Nick Place, the Dean and Director of Extension. Agent Kelsey Irvine spoke on Wanda’s impact State-wide. Wanda has been a mentor and asset to hundreds of youth, multiple fair associations, many agents, and fellow volunteers. She has always embodied what it meant to be a leader and friend to the 4-H organization. We are so thankful for everything she does locally and beyond!

Our late and beloved Kristen Poppell received several awards for her outstanding work throughout her career. Kristen received recognition for the Youth Leadership Nassau program and was awarded the Excellence in Teen Programming and Greg Yost Memorial Youth in Leadership Awards. Kristen also received the prestigious Achievement in Service Award, celebrating all her success throughout her time in UF IFAS Extension and 4-H. These awards truly do showcase Kristen’s gift of providing only the best programming for our county’s youth.

To get a glimpse into the impact this amazing agent left behind, a long standing ovation and tearful speech were performed in her honor. These awards were accepted by her loving husband, Chase Poppell. Her family and in-laws attended the ceremony in support.Chase Poppell with award
