The Mid-Florida Research and Education Center (MREC) connected with industry professionals at the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA)’s 2024 Landscape Show, a three-day event that brings in over 7,000 industry professionals from across the southeastern United States. From Aug. 21 to 23 at the Orange County Convention Center, MREC faculty, staff and students showcased the center’s latest research, addressing key challenges facing Florida’s greenhouse and nursery industries.
Representing the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), MREC’s booth featured ongoing research in integrated pest management, plant pathology, weed management, plant physiology and consumer behavior. MREC’s presence highlighted its role in advancing research and education, its dedication to helping greenhouse and nursery professionals, and its commitment to maintaining strong connections with Florida’s agricultural community.
Several UF/IFAS MREC and Extension experts played a prominent role at the show, drawing significant interest. Plant pathology associate professor David Norman spoke with visitors about plant health and the center’s weekly plant clinic. Entomology professor Lance Osborne drew in crowds with his demonstration of biological control methods, featuring live beneficial insects under a microscope. Regional specialized Extension agent Liz Felter shared her expertise in horticultural outreach and education, offering insights into food systems and ornamental horticulture, and regional specialized Extension agent Yilin Zhuang offered insights on water conservation efforts across Florida.
MREC’s booth attracted considerable attention, with many stopping by to learn about the center’s latest research projects and its alignment with industry needs. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with our experts, get their questions answered and gain valuable insights into MREC’s work. Educational resources were also prominently spotlighted, emphasizing the center’s role in equipping professionals with the knowledge and resources to thrive in Florida’s nursery, greenhouse and agriculture industries.
The center looks forward to continuing its engagement with industry professionals at FNGLA’s Tropical International Plant Expo in January 2025.
