April is Financial Literacy Month: Building Skills for a Stronger Financial Future
April is Financial Literacy Month—a nationwide effort recognized each year by state and federal agencies, financial institutions, nonprofit organizations, schools, and businesses. Together, these groups work to highlight the importance of financial literacy and expand access to financial education for individuals and families.
This national campaign emphasizes financial wellness and the critical role money management plays in everyday life. Financial education equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to earn, borrow, spend, invest, and save money wisely and with purpose.
Financial literacy is essential at every stage of life. From children learning basic money habits to adults making major financial decisions, education plays a key role in long-term success. Financially informed adults are better prepared to navigate significant milestones such as buying a vehicle or achieving homeownership. Strong financial literacy skills also support the ability to set and reach both short- and long-term financial goals, improving overall financial well-being.
At its core, financial literacy includes the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to make informed financial decisions. These decisions are vital to achieving financial security. In today’s economic climate, where more than half of working Americans report living paycheck to paycheck, the need for accessible and practical financial education has never been greater.
To support our community, University of Florida IFAS Extension Family and Consumer Sciences agents offer a Financial Well-Being Course Series held on the first Tuesday of each month. This free program is available as a “Lunch and Learn” session at noon and an evening session from 6:30–7:30 PM, making it accessible for a variety of schedules. Topics include Budgeting, Improving Credit, Debt Management, and Introduction to Investing.
