Maintenance Budgets and Negative Impact on Research Facilities

Last week, our colleagues at the UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Education Center and the UF/IFAS Gulf Coast Research and Education Center hosted a national reporter to show them the state of facilities. “How Innovation Dies: Scrimpy Maintenance Budgets Threaten America’s Cutting Edge Scientific Research Labs” appeared in Politico today and does a nice job of explaining the national magnitude of the problems even though the photo is of the Packinghouse at CREC.

APLU has done a national study and is pursuing support from federal resources for land-grant universities, and UF continues to seek funding from the state of Florida to support its deferred maintenance needs through its standard procedures as defined in state law. Unfortunately, private donors typically aren’t excited about giving money for projects like roofs, HVAC replacements, windows, and such. Solving this issue will take a lot of different resources pulling together in the same direction.
