Jackson Alternative School Students Visit Extension

On Wednesday, September 7, sixteen students in grades 2-12 from Jackson Alternative School (JAS) visited the peanut field plot at the Jackson County Extension Office on Penn Ave.

This event was the result of a collaborative effort between JAS Principal Rex Suggs and Jackson 4-H Agent Angel, to bring 4-H Programs to JAS, and an invitation from the Crop IPM Extension Agent Ethan Carter to expand students’ knowledge of peanuts.

Students participated in an informational talk with Carter and then dug peanuts and identified insects. After the field session students moved to the pavilion to sample boiled peanuts and learn more about the processes involved in planting, cultivating and harvesting peanuts along with examining insects.

Jackson County 4-H would like to thank Mr. Carter, and the students, teachers and administration for helping to make this event a success. We look forward to doing it again!
