Local Youth Discover Their “Inner Engineer” During 4-H Robotics Day Camp!

Twelve youth attended the Jackson County 4-H Robotics Day Camp July 20-22, held at the UF/IFAS Jackson County Extension Office in Marianna. The youth worked in teams to create and construct robotic vehicles, focusing on motion powered by propulsion. They created balloon powered cars, cars constructed from recycled bottles that were motorized, and a gear operated robot during the first two days of the camp. The youth experienced experiential learning in science by finding out how things work, they discovered their “Inner Engineer” by using what they found out to design something to work, and they learned how to implement technology by using the tools they had and the processes they learned to make something work! Two youth were recognized with medals for winning their respective race categories. Camper Luke Mlckovsky was the Balloon Powered Car Race Champion and camper Zoe Saunders was the Propeller Powered Car Champion. Both received 4-H medals, and all participants were recognized with certificates of participation.

On the third day the youth traveled to the North Florida Fairgrounds in Tallahassee to compete in a Robotics Field Day competition with 4-H youth from Leon, Liberty and Gadsden Counties. We hope that this experience will encourage the youth to continue with the 4-H program in Jackson County and that they will compete at the District level Robotics competition in November during the North Florida Fair.
