The Jackson County 4-H Embryology Program has completed the first classroom and 4-H club Embryology projects with participants from Dayspring Christian Academy, Malone School and the Jackson County Hoppers and Cluckers 4-H Club.

With help from a grant from Florida Agriculture in the Classroom and donations from the Marianna Tractor Supply Store, Jackson County 4-H Agent Angel Granger was able to purchase incubators and supplies and offer the 4-H Embryology Program to classrooms and 4-H clubs in Jackson County. The introduction of this program has proven to be both educational and exciting!

Dayspring Chick Brooder
Students from Mrs. Yount’s second grade class prepared this brooder in expectation of their new chicks.

Incubators, eggs, curriculum, a candling light, and materials were distributed beginning in March. Participants were asked to keep a daily journal of their observations regarding the progress of their eggs and have learned about the growth processes that occur as the chick develops. Mrs. Yount’s class from Dayspring Christian Academy was able to hatch 72% of their chicks!

A brooder is also on display at the UF/IFAS Jackson County Extension Office where we have been showcasing the 4-H Embryology Program with chicks hatched by the 4-H club. We will continue the program through the summer with a day camp in August and plans are also underway to include an Embryology Station at the 2015 Jackson County 4-H Ag Adventures Program scheduled for November 3 and 4 at the Research Station in Greenwood.
