Font change for university brand system

University of Florida recently completed a review of its brand fonts, and all university materials and online work moving forward will need to use the new font selections. The committee of design professionals has finalized recommendations emphasizing accessibility, compatibility, flexibility, and distinctiveness.

When does this change need to be completed?

  • Due to licensing agreements with the previous font creators, it is crucial to implement this change by June 27, 2025. This update includes web presences and templates. Any templates not updated by this date should be removed and re-uploaded when they are corrected.

Static files such as PDFs and JPGs created before the June 15, 2025 deadline can remain unchanged unless they are edited or updated after this date.

Do we need to update all of our old materials?

  • Print materials produced before June 15, 2025 may remain in circulation. However, if a material is updated, it must be recreated using the new fonts.

Core Fonts

Core brand and Extended Character Language fonts are open source and can be downloaded from Google Fonts.

  • IBM Plex Sans: The primary workhorse font suitable for virtually any typographic application. Use it for titles, body text, captions, etc.
    • IBM Plex Sans can be used in any type of media, including brochures, flyers, UF letterhead (see template here), and all other communications
  • Source Serif: Use as body copy for pieces that require a more classic, academic feeling.
    • Source Serif works best for article text in long documents
  • Anybody: A display typeface appropriate for brief callouts, factoids, and numbers. It is also suitable for adding emphasis.
    • Anybody can be used for titles and subheads on any communications piece.
  • Quotes: An expressive display typeface that allows for creative flexibility in headlines and more expression within the brand. Use Quotes minimally to bring attention to a word or two. It is available in Adobe Fonts with an Adobe Creative Cloud license or you can Quotes Script in Canva.

*Note: Canva’s free account does not support the upload of custom fonts. This feature is available only to users with Canva Pro, Enterprise, or Education subscriptions.

Extended Character Language Support and Accessibility

Use these fonts for documents that contain complex content— such as math equations, foreign languages, legal documentation, etc.

  • Noto Sans: Works well for both headlines and body copy when communicating in languages for which the necessary glyphs are available in other brand fonts.
  • Atkinson Hyperlegible Next: Designed specifically to increase legibility for readers with low vision and to improve reading comprehension.
  • IBM Plex Mono: Use it to differentiate AI-related materials or in contexts where aligned characters are necessary (for example, in coding, technical documentation, or tables).
