As concerns continue to grow over the threat of New World screwworm, UF/IFAS Extension Holmes County is partnering with UF/IFAS Extension Walton and Escambia Counties to offer a free educational webinar to help pet owners prepare, recognize the risks, protect their animals, and know what to do if an infestation is suspected.
The live webinar, “Preparing Pet Owners for the Threat of New World Screwworm,” will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. CST. The program is open to pet owners and anyone interested in learning more about this serious pest of livestock and companion animals.
New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals. Dogs, cats, livestock, wildlife, and even people can be affected if flies lay eggs in open wounds or other vulnerable areas. Early detection and prompt treatment are critical to prevent. While there are currently no cases in Florida, the threat is present as there are active cases in the United States.
During the webinar, participants will learn:
- What the New World screwworm is and why it is a concern.
- Which pets are at risk?
- How to recognize the signs and symptoms of infestation.
- Steps pet owners can take to reduce the risk of infestation.
- What to do if a pet is suspected of having screwworms?
- Current updates on surveillance and response efforts.
The webinar is free to attend; however, registration is required. Participants who register will also receive access to the webinar recording following the event.
