What is Ag-Abilities?
Ag-Abilities is an inclusive agricultural education program in Hillsborough County, created to give students of all abilities the chance to experience agriculture through hands-on, accessible learning. Designed specifically for youth with disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, physical disabilities, and other exceptionalities, Ag-Abilities helps students build confidence, life skills, and agricultural knowledge in a way that meets them where they are.
At its core, Ag-Abilities aligns perfectly with the mission of 4-H and UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County 4-H: creating meaningful opportunities for all youth to learn by doing. 4-H has always focused on positive youth development by helping young people gain confidence, independence, and practical life skills, and Ag-Abilities is a powerful example of that mission in action. Through this program, students who may not always have access to traditional agricultural experiences are given the chance to explore, engage, and succeed in a supportive environment built for them.
After seeing the incredible potential this program could have for local youth, UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County 4-H partnered with Florida Farm Bureau in 2023 to help expand Ag-Abilities within Hillsborough County. Since then, that partnership has continued to grow alongside the support of the Florida State Fairgrounds, creating an event that opens doors for students to experience agriculture in ways that are engaging, encouraging, and inclusive.
How does Ag-Abilities work?
One of the most impactful parts of Ag-Abilities is that it starts long before students ever step foot at the event. Throughout the school year, participating teachers are provided with agricultural curriculum, lesson plans, and PowerPoint resources that they can use directly in their classrooms to help prepare students ahead of time. These resources are intentionally designed to support diverse learners while introducing important agricultural concepts in structured, accessible ways. This means students are not just showing up to a field trip, they are arriving prepared, familiar with concepts, and ready to confidently apply what they have been learning in their own classrooms.
This classroom-to-event approach is what makes Ag-Abilities so special. It gives students the opportunity to practice skills ahead of time, build familiarity, and then showcase their knowledge in a larger hands-on setting designed for success. For many students, this experience becomes more than just a fun day, it becomes a chance to feel confident, capable, and included while experiencing how agriculture and 4-H truly can be for everyone.
Ag-Abilities 2026:
This year, Ag-Abilities welcomed 65 registered students from eight schools across Hillsborough County to the Florida State Fairgrounds for a day full of interactive learning through four unique educational tracks.
Track 1 focused on cattle education, where students explored breeds and parts of cattle, identified tools used in cattle production, and learned basic livestock management skills. This station gave students the opportunity to connect classroom knowledge to real-world animal science in an engaging, hands-on way.
Track 2 centered on food and nutrition by helping students make the connection between agriculture and the foods they eat every day. Students identified grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and other food groups while building balanced plates and using interactive puzzles to better understand healthy portions and nutrition.
Track 3 introduced students to plant science through hands-on exploration of 10 different plants. Participants learned to identify plant varieties, explored tools used in plant production, and discovered important characteristics such as whether plants were annuals or perennials and whether they preferred sun or shade. This station helped students better understand the role plants play in both agriculture and everyday life.
Track 4 gave students the opportunity to truly experience agriculture firsthand by either safely driving a mini tractor with guided supervision or creating their own paper pot and planting a seed to take home. This track captured the heart of experiential learning by giving students memorable, hands-on opportunities that made agriculture exciting and accessible.
Each rotation was intentionally built to be interactive, adaptable, and accessible so every student could actively participate, build confidence, and experience success.
The day ended with an awards ceremony that celebrated student participation and accomplishments, reinforcing the importance of encouragement, recognition, and positive youth development. Thanks to the generosity of the Florida Strawberry Growers Association (FSGA), students also enjoyed pizza during the celebration, making an already impactful day even more memorable.
Ag-Abilities is a true example of what can happen when partnerships, preparation, and inclusion come together. Through the collaboration of UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County 4-H, Florida Farm Bureau, the Florida State Fairgrounds, and community supporters, students are given the opportunity to grow their agricultural knowledge, strengthen life skills, and experience agriculture in ways that are welcoming and achievable.
As Ag-Abilities continues to grow, it remains a powerful reminder that 4-H is for all youth. By prioritizing inclusion, experiential learning, and supportive opportunities, this program helps ensure every young person—regardless of ability—has the chance to build confidence, discover new passions, and see that there is a place for them in agriculture.
