Out of Your Gourd: The Amazing World of Gourds

Pumpkins and gourds are some of the most recognizable symbols of the fall season. They appear everywhere from front porch displays to festive baked goods and seasonal beverages. Join UF/IFAS Extension Putnam County for Out of Your Gourd!, an engaging workshop that explores the fascinating world of pumpkins, gourds, and luffas. We’ll discuss their history, uses, and cultivation.

Participants will learn how cultures around the world have grown and used pumpkins and gourds for centuries. People have transformed these versatile plants into decorations, containers, birdhouses, utensils, natural sponges, and craft materials. We’ll examine the differences between pumpkins, ornamental gourds, birdhouse gourds, and luffas and explore how people have valued each throughout history.

The program will also cover the basics of growing gourds and pumpkins in Florida. Participants will learn about planting requirements, harvesting methods, and proper curing techniques. We’ll explain how curing turns many gourds into durable materials suitable for crafts, decorations, and household items. We’ll also discuss the best planting times for Florida gardens and how gardeners can prepare for next season’s crop.

More Than Just Halloween Decorations

This workshop explores their historical importance, surprising uses, and unique characteristics. Participants will also gain practical knowledge that can help them successfully grow these plants in Florida.

Whether you’re interested in seasonal decorations, natural crafts, gardening, or history, this program offers something for everyone. Perfect for homeowners, gardeners, Master Gardener Volunteers, and anyone curious about the many uses and fascinating history of pumpkins, gourds, and luffas.
