Area residents are invited to a Day in the Garden, hosted by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Nature Coast Master Gardener (NCMG) volunteers and Levy County Extension staff.
Are you new to Florida and find it challenging to keep a thriving garden? You’re not alone. People want to know strategies for growing edibles and ornamentals in sandy, well drained soils. How do we manage plant needs for water and fertilizer in North Florida’s diverse environment?
Meet at the pavilion, Thursday, April 17, 9 am-10:30 am, Levy Extension campus, 625 North Hathaway Avenue, Bronson. Some walking is involved. This is a free outdoor event with swag bag, first come.
The Day in the Garden event provides information and resources to grow edible and ornamental plants with real-world examples. We’ll provide information and resources on soil testing, plant selection, installation and fertilization.
Whether a newcomer or seasoned gardener, join us for this free and informative outdoor event.
Gain insight on managing plant needs for water and nutrients, including the use of drip irrigation and paper mulch for watermelon with the 4-H Giant Watermelon Project. Melon irrigation system delivers water and dissolved fertilizer to the root zone as plants grow. Citrus are blooming in the orchard and muscadine leaves are emerging along the pruned stems. You’ll learn about Florida-Friendly Landscaping principle #1 is Right Plant, Right Place. Happy plants are better able to resist disease and pest infestation. Matching plants to site conditions including light, soil pH and soil moisture, is one way to keep plants happy and thriving.
