Birding at Lakeside Ranch with The Audubon Moment’s John Nelson

Join UF/IFAS Extension Agent Ken Gioeli and Florida Master Naturalist John Nelson, Creator of the Audubon Moment, for a birding excursion at Lakeside Ranch Stormwater Treatment Area (STA). This collaboration between the UF/IFAS Extension St. Lucie County and Audubon of Martin County will be conducted on February 17, 2024 beginning at 8 a.m. Participants are likely to see a variety of birds as such as white pelicans, roseate spoonbills, and others during this excursion, so cameras and spotting scopes are highly encouraged. The main parking area is located on Highway 441 approximately 2.5 miles south of County Road 15B / SE 126th Blvd.

The Lakeside Ranch STA is located in western Martin County adjacent to Lake Okeechobee. South Florida Water Management District describes this location as playing “a crucial role in the restoration of the Lake Okeechobee watershed by improving the quality of water flowing into the lake.” Wildlife flourishes in this site. It is also a refuge for migrating birds – especially during this time of year.

Participants should wear appropriate field attire.  Closed toe shoes, hiking boots, long pants, hat, sunscreen and water are recommended.

Registration is required.  This program registration fee is $10.  For additional information, email Ken Gioeli ktgioeli@ufl.edu. Extension programs are open to all persons without regard to race, color, sexual orientation, sex, age, disability, religion, or national origin. People seeking accommodation can make requests two weeks prior to start of the event.
