A new book, The Routledge Companion to Mindfulness at Work, will be released in September 2020. It is described as “a comprehensive primary reference work for mindfulness (including creativity and flow) in the workplace, including business, healthcare, and educational settings.”

Dr. Sabine Grunwald, Professor in the UF/IFAS Soil and Water Sciences Department and Director of the UF Mindfulness Program, co-authored one of the chapters. It is titled “The State of Mindfulness at Top U.S. Public Universities: A Brief Review and Path Forward.”

The chapter begins with some sobering statistics on the stressors impacting faculty and students at U.S. universities. More demands, fewer resources, and heightened anxiety has led to a variety of mental health issues. Those range from trouble sleeping and loneliness to depression and thoughts of suicide. But it does not have to be that way. Evidence-based mindfulness research has shown that mindfulness reduces stress and depression, and it enhances relaxation, well-being, health, and attention; the latter beneficial in research and education at universities.

Grunwald and her writing partner, UF doctoral student Liva LaMontagne, lay out the argument for doing more to incorporate mindfulness into higher education. Specifically, they surveyed mindfulness programs at the top 25 public universities in the United States. Next, they look at the challenges to bolster such programs into higher education. Finally, the pair highlight lessons learned when a major U.S. university takes proactive steps to embrace mindfulness.

“This is a must-read book for those interested in mindfulness at the University of Florida and higher education,” Grunwald said.
