January – National Mentoring Month

Did you know January is National Mentoring Month?  The definition of a mentor is an experienced or trusted advisor. In life, many of us have mentors whom we look up to and seek advice from. Did you know mentoring benefits both the mentor and the mentee? These benefits include:

  • Improved confidence.
  • The development of communication skills.
  • Exposes participants to new experiences.
  • Improved listening and organizational skills.

As 4-H Leaders or adults, we often have other adults that serve as our mentors. However, have you ever thought about having youth in your club serve as club mentors? Many clubs may already have club mentors that are not necessarily called mentors but are teen leaders. These youth work with the younger or more inexperienced youth in the club to help them with their questions and projects.

Does your club currently have youth that are participating in a mentoring role? If not, this may be a way for youth to take a more active leadership role in your club.
