Gardening in Gadsden, Garden Education Series

Whether you want to start a garden at your home, at your school, or in the community, this program will give you the tools you need to develop the skill you will need to grow, and maintain a successful garden.

Please join us for a hands-on gardening workshop at the FAMU Research Center located at 4259 Bainbridge Highway in Quincy. This workshop is designed to teach participants everything they need to know about starting and maintaining a garden.

6 WEEK WORKSHOP AGENDA

Week 1: GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR GARDEN. February 27, 2018, 5:30-7:30 pm. This session will cover the types of gardens, growing seasons in NW Florida and how to plant and maintain your own garden.

Week 2: RAISED BEDS AND CONTAINER GARDENING, March 6, 2018, 5:30-7:30 pm. This session will cover various types of plants & herbs, good and bad bugs in your garden, plant identification, pesticides, and fertilizers and weed identification.

Week 3: UF RESEARCH CENTER TOUR, March 20, 2018, 5:30-7:30 pm. This session will cover gardening systems such as hydroponics, self-watering buckets and container gardening, including a hands-on demo of each. This session also includes a tour of the FAMU Research Center’s grounds.

Week 4: GROWING YOUR OWN HERB GARDEN. March 27, 2018, 5:30-7:30 pm. This session will cover food safety in the garden, the nutritional aspects of growing a garden, adding gardening education into your lesson plans, basic cottage food information, funding and grant opportunities for school gardens.

Week 5: COOKING FROM THE GARDEN. April 3, 2018, 5:30-7:30 pm. This session will offer a cooking demo and lesson using ingredients that are easily grown in Northwest Florida.

Week 6: HARVESTING AND POST-HARVESTING. April 12, 2018, 5:30-7:30 pm. This session will demo how to harvest your garden and what to do to prepare for the next seasons harvest.

Registration Fee $50.00
