Congratulations Dr. Joao Ferreira, William H. Miernyk Research Excellence Medal Recipient

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Joao Ferreira on receiving The William H. Miernyk Research Excellence Medal! This award is sponsored by the Regional Research Institute at West Virginia University and is awarded annually to an eligible author of the best paper presented at the Meeting of the Southern Regional Science Association. Dr. Ferreira is one of FRE’s Postdoctoral Associates in our Economic Impact Analysis Program. His paper is titled, “2018 Red Tide and peer-to-peer accommodations: Assessing the economic impacts using a multi-regional input-output model”, co-authored by Bijeta Saha, Gabriel Carrero, Dr. Jinwon Kim, and Dr. Christa Court.

The paper was a multi-disciplinary team effort including Bijeta Saha (Ph.D. student in Food and Resource Economics), Dr. Christa Court (Assistant Professor in FRE), Gabriel Carrero (Ph.D. student in UF’s Geography Department), and Jinwon Kim (Assistant Professor in UF’s Department of Tourism, Hospitality & Event Management). The authors used data from Airbnb properties and water sample records from the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute to conduct an analysis to estimate the effects of a harmful algal bloom (October 2017 – January 2019) on the peer-to-peer accommodation market.

Congratulations, again, Dr. Ferreira and the Co-Authors of this award-winning paper. Your hard work and dedication continue to shine through your research.
