New 4-H Scholarship First of Its Kind in Florida

When we think of “scholarships” we of course think of the traditional college and university scholarships for students, but a new scholarship is the first of its kind in Florida 4-H. Established this spring by George D. “Sandy” Dunn in memory of his wife of 62 years, the Diane M. Dunn Legacy Trades 4-H Scholarship Endowment is the first 4-H scholarship in the state dedicated solely to students pursuing further education in accredited trade, technical or vocational programs. The scholarship will primarily benefit 4-H members in St. Johns County, with opportunities extended to 4-H members from Putnam and Flagler Counties.

Stacey Ellison, 4-H State Program Leader shared, “this scholarship is a powerful investment in the lives of young people and recognizes these careers as meaningful pathways to success in the workforce and life. The Diane M. Dunn Trades Scholarship is a life-changing opportunity for youth and their future families, embodying a shared commitment to helping youth prepare for their future on many pathways to becoming successful, contributing members of our communities.”

Honoring the Life of Diane M. Dunn

Sandy chose to make this legacy gift in loving memory of his late wife, Diane M. Dunn. Diane was generous, friendly and adventurous, and known for her leadership, service and commitment to helping young people in her community. She passed away in January 2024.

Diane believed deeply in the power of youth and the importance of supporting young people in their growth and educational pursuits. Sandy, Diane and their family have been active supporters of 4-H in St. Johns County and the region. While attending an annual awards banquet, Diane recognized the opportunity to invest in students pursuing technical and vocational career opportunities.

Diane has long been active in community and Extension programs. She was an organizing member of Extension’s Community Homemakers Club in 1972 and served as president of the Volusia County Council of Extension Homemakers. She also served on the Volusia County Fair’s Board of Directors for over 20 years, including many years as Creative Arts Display Superintendent.

The Diane M. Dunn Legacy Trades Scholarship will be available for students to apply for in perpetuity in memory of the work she did on behalf of others. This endowment reflects her life’s work by helping others learn the value of practical skills and assist them in attaining experience and life success.

Inaugural Scholarship Awardee: Rhylie Hayes

The inaugural Diane M. Dunn Trades Scholarship recipient is Rhylie Hayes of St. Johns County. Rhylie graduated from Creekside High School this spring. During her four years with the St. Johns 4-H Hippology Team, she has completed four Horse Projects and competed in state and regional horse shows. She plans to attend Idaho Horseshoeing School this fall to pursue a career as a farrier.

Rhylie’s dedication, work ethic and tenacity are evidenced in the way she mentors younger 4-H members, wakes up at 4:00am to train her horse before school, and refused to let a broken tailbone stop her from competing. This year she was named the Area North Ranch Grand Champion.

With the support of this scholarship, I plan to purchase the tools necessary for a successful career in the farrier industry. I am committed to continuing the values of 4-H—head, heart, hands, and health—in both my professional and personal life.”

Rhylie’s ultimate goal is to open her own farrier business. “I believe in doing things the right way the first time, taking the time to understand each horse, communicating with owners and vets, and always striving to improve. With hard work, a strong foundation from school, and support from this scholarship, I’m confident I can make my dream a reality.”

Preparing a Beyond Ready Generation

Florida 4-H is preparing a generation beyond ready to tackle life’s challenges. Fun, hands-on learning and connection to caring adult mentors encourage youth to develop the skills, resilience, and confidence they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. 4-H is open to youth aged 5-18. Scholarships to graduating high school seniors recognize their achievements in 4-H while providing a vital boost as they take their next steps into adulthood.

4-H Beyond Ready logoTrade and vocational careers are pathways to success for many students. Trade schools offer a practical, cost-effective alternative to four-year programs. They equip students for entry into the workforce with in-demand skills in construction, healthcare, hospitality, IT, mechanics, and more. In a competitive and changing job market, these critical career fields offer stable employment opportunities. Furthermore, they bring skilled students back to communities, supporting the local economy.

As an endowment, gifts to the fund are invested to generate scholarship funds year after year, creating an enduring impact for St. Johns, Flagler, and Putnam Counties. Contributions can be made online by clicking here, or by mail to UF Foundation, ATTN: Dunn Endowment, PO Box 110170, Gainesville, FL 32611.
