Thursday, April 23 —Five Years Later: Building & Redefining Resilience How Prepared is the Gulf Coast for Future Disasters

Monday April 20, 2015 marked the five-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. This week the University of Florida’s Healthy Gulf Healthy Communities (HGHC) invites you to a very important community event.

The 2015 HGHC Regional Forum takes place tomorrow, Thursday, April 23, at three locations including the University of Florida in Gainesville, the Apalachicola Community Center and the Langley Bell 4-H Center in Cantonment. Community leaders from non-profit and faith-based organizations are encouraged to attend as well as city and county leaders and those from the seafood and tourism industry.

During this meeting researchers and community participants will discuss how our Gulf Coast communities can better prepare for future disasters as well as:

  • Lessons learned in the five years since the DWH oil spill
  • Research findings from project directors studying individual and family resiliency, community resiliency and seafood safety in impacted Gulf Coast communities
  • Current needs and gaps that continue in impacted communities
  • Next steps to strengthen communities and build resiliency

Check out the detailed agenda for the event here. HGHC is a project funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and consists of a team of biologists, psychologists, social scientists and community partners that work together to help Gulf Coast communities continue to recover and strengthen.
