Biology and Management of Dayflowers (Commelina spp.) in Ornamental Plant Production and Landscapes in Florida

Several native and non-native dayflower (Commelina) species can be found in Florida landscapes and production nurseries. Two of the most widely distributed species include the native whitemouth dayflower (Commelina erecta) and the non-native spreading dayflower (Commelina diffusa), which is thought to have been introduced to Florida from Asia. Both species are widely distributed and have been vouchered in nearly every county in Florida. This publication is for home gardeners and other green industry professionals to aid in the proper identification of these two common dayflower species. Also, it includes general management information for both of these flower species.

Keeping the Ghost Orchid Part of Florida’s Heritage: Challenges to Survival and Promises of Restoration

 The purpose of this publication is to inform land stewards and enthusiasts about conservation efforts surrounding a charismatic species: the ghost orchid (Dendrophylax lindenii, Bentham ex Rolfe, Orchidaceae). This orchid is a rare, leafless epiphytic orchid native to southwestern Florida and Cuba. In Florida, populations have declined significantly due to the compounding effects of habitat fragmentation, poaching, and shifting climate. Moreover, these threats have altered the hydrology and ecological integrity of critical swamp habitats, further limiting the already restricted range of the species. As a result, scientists and land managers have intensified efforts to study and conserve the remaining wild populations, while also developing propagation and reintroduction strategies.

Effects of Soil pH on Root Uptake, Accumulation of Aluminum, and Growth Enhancement in Camellia

Camellias grow better in acidic soils, which have a lower pH that can affect nutrient uptake. Further, aluminum is more easily taken up at these lower pH levels. Camellias, being aluminum accumulators, can benefit from aluminum uptake. This publication is for those growing camellias in their flower gardens and those interested in the uptake and effects of aluminum on these plants.
