New Master Gardener Volunteer Class Forming in Duval County

Do you enjoy plants and always seem to be puttering in the garden? Are you interested in finding fun ways to serve your community and enjoy gardening at the same time? If yes, this class might be for you. A New Master Gardener Volunteer class is forming in Duval County.

Master Gardener Volunteer is a title given to individuals who receive in-depth horticultural training from University of Florida/IFAS employees and in return give 75 hours of volunteer service helping their local county extension office. Master Gardener trainings will be help on Wednesdays beginning in early August and ending in October. Sessions begin at 9:30 am and end at 3:30 pm each Wednesday. After the trainee obtains the required 75 hours of volunteer service, they are awarded the title of Master Gardener Volunteer. Many chose to remain active in the program by agreeing to volunteer 35 hours and attending 10 hours of continuing education each year. Master Gardener Volunteers continue to learn because information is constantly changing based on research conducted by UF/IFAS specialists.

Training will include topics such as basic plant science, entomology, plant pathology, nematology, vegetable gardening, fruit culture, woody ornamental plants, lawn management, plant propagation, Florida-Friendly Landscaping, and more. Classes are taught using PowerPoint presentations along with hands-on applications.

Master Gardeners Volunteers give their hours in various ways. Some examples are:
Planting butterfly garden
Master Gardener Volunteers assist with community garden projects
  • answering plant related telephone calls at the Extension Office
  • test soil for pH
  • teach 4-H youth about plants
  • plant and maintain demonstration gardens
  • teach groups about landscape techniques to protect the environment
  • provide assistance on school garden projects
  • assist clients at the Duval County Canning/Nutrition Center
  • write articles for local newspapers and magazine
How to apply:

Applications for a limited number of openings are now being taking for the new Master Gardener Volunteer Class forming in Duval County. To apply, you must live in Duval County, have an interest in gardening, and enjoy learning/sharing. The cost is $150.00 and the deadline to apply is June 14.
