A Science-Based Recommendation for Citrus Growers

The active waiting: Why “Doing Nothing” is Actually Doing Something

After Florida’s recent freeze event, we started hearing a common question: “What should I do to recover the trees?”

The science-based is: strategic patience just wait.

It doesn’t mean abandoning your grove. It means shifting from reactive to responsive management. The trees are working hard, redirecting energy to survival functions, step-by-step. With no rush, our role now is to support that process, not override it.

Key Question: Is your intervention based on science, or just the psychological need to “do something”?

1-2: Immediate visible damage (leaves, young shoots)

2-3: Secondary damage reveals (bark, stems)

 1-3: Root system impacts become clear

3+: Full extent of damage visible

Two Scenarios, Two Strategies:  Plant Recovery Pathways

Even within the same grove, county, or conditions, we perceive very different conditions and consequently adopt different strategies, especially under drought. As a result, there’s no single answer, but evaluating and monitoring ongoing symptoms and plant response will help us decide the step-by-step process in our effort to recover the plants.

The severity and affected organs, among others, will dictate the plan’s performance and its ability to grow new tissues and stabilize the patient’s recovery.

Scenario 1: Trees with Active Root Systems

  • When roots remain functional, trees can mobilize stored reserves while gradually rebuilding their canopy (branches and leaves). As managers we should focus on supporting existing root functions without overwhelming the system.

Scenario 2: Compromised Root Systems

  • Critical time in the recovering process. Trees with damaged roots may deplete the stored starch (energy reserves) and nutrients before healthy roots can uptake nutrients again. It requires careful monitoring and modified management.

Irrigation: More frequent, less water.

Although it is very dependent on each condition, some people haven’t changed their irrigation schedules since the freeze. Irrigating the same even when the conditions change, is like trying to fill a bucket with holes. Damaged leaves and roots don’t need as much water. You should reduce irrigation and keep an eye on soil moisture and how plants look. By observing closely, you can determine how often and how much to water. Base your decisions by measuring the soil humidity in the root. Read more

Reduced canopy = Reduced transpiration = Reduced water needs

Damaged roots = Reduced uptake capacity

Over-irrigation = Root rot + nutrient leaching

Nutrition: Less is More during Recovery Mode

Post-freeze nutrition requires a complete mindset shift. As I had been telling some growers, your trees may be like patients in intensive care. They need supportive care, not aggressive treatment.

  If the roots were affected by water (frost protection), low temperatures, pathogens, or their combination, a recovery/adaptation protocol will focus on balancing the recovery of the new shoots and roots.

The Nutrition approach adjustment:

  1. Use less salt-based fertilizers (damaged roots can’t handle salt stress)

  2. Eliminate urea nitrogen (promotes soft growth vulnerable to additional stress)
  3. Increase organic matter (supports beneficial microorganisms)
  4. Focus on root development (phosphorus, mycorrhizal inoculants, PGRs)

Are Your IPC’s or Tree Bark (trunk) Shield Helping the Trees?

If you’re using Individual Protective covers- IPCs, did you leave the bottoms sealed or leave the zip ties too tight?

While they provided an “igloo effect” during the freeze, keeping them sealed. along with the trunk pot or protection some growers use, creates excessive humidity and litter accumulation, where pathogens, mold, bacterias, ants, and dust will promote more damage.
