Avoid the Tree Hackers, Select an ISA Certified Arborist for Aesthetic and Healthy Pruning!
Its happening in my neighborhood now. The guys that were repairing radiators or odd-job types are driving around in unmarked, homemade box trucks and and offer to hurricane whack your shade trees (cash only) before hurricane season. Do NOT go for it.
Get a pruning agreement in ink: NO GTO! NO GUTTING (lion’s-tailing); NO TOPPING; NO OVER-LIFTING! THE FINISHED PRODUCT WILL BE A TREE CANOPY THAT IS BALANCED AND REDUCTION CUTS WILL BE USED FOR THE majority of the branch cuts.
Please check out people’s credentials and do not allow jacklegs who only take cash to ruin your trees! This sort of cutting (in pictures) will result in soft, superficial, sucker growth that will not hold up in strong winds. That means long-term damage. Select an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) CERTIFIED arborist! Find them here:
Branches should be cut back to a strong lateral (reduction cut) that will be the new leader and a central leader should be evident, not all cut at the same height (hat-racking or topping). A good tree pruning will not be an ugly head-turner such as these pics show. Proper pruning will be like a good haircut and not that obvious.
