Sensitive Briar – Wild Weeds

Wild Weeds – Weed of the Month

Sensitive Briar

Mimosa quadrivalvis

Sensitive Briar is a trailing or creeping perennial vine with small, shiny dark green leaves. When touched, the plant responds by folding in it’s leaves as a protective measure. The plant also defends itself with small recurved prickles.

The flowers bloom in spring-fall. They are showy, appearing as small pink balls growing along the ground in prairies, ravines, and open woods. This member of the pea/legume family is able to fixate nitrogen in the soil, making it a friendly neighbor to other plant species.
