Carolina Yellow-Eyed Grass

Xyris caroliniana

Carolina Yellow-Eyed Grass is a perennial wildflower found in flatwoods, sandhills, wet prairies, and other habitats in Florida. You’ll find this plant blooming in late spring through fall, the inconspicuous flowers being pollinated by wind and bees primarily. There are 24 Xyris species found in Florida but this particular species dares to be different, opening it’s flowers in the afternoon rather than in the morning as its counterparts do.

Flowers are borne in cone-like atop a smooth, twisted stem. When the petals fall off, it gives the appearance of small pinecones floating about the ground.
