In recognition of securing a $1.5M research award, UF ABE’s Vivek Sharma, Ph.D. has been awarded the prestigious UF‑IFAS Large Grant Golden Gator Award. His research, titled “Impact of Rotational Cover Crop on Soil Quality Parameters, Soil-Water and Surface Energy Balance Dynamics, and Crop Productivity” identifies and explores solutions towards a critical knowledge gap in Florida regarding how cover crops influence the productivity of subsequent cash crops under the state’s unique conditions.
Cover crops are an important component of Florida’s agricultural Best Management Practices (BMPs), to improve water quality and conserve natural resources. They are widely recognized for their ability to enhance soil health by increasing organic matter, improving soil structure, reducing erosion and nutrient losses, and enhancing water infiltration. Florida’s sandy soils, high rainfall variability, and subtropical climate create complex interactions among soil water, nutrients, and crop growth that differ significantly from other regions. This gap in data limits the ability to refine BMP recommendations and provide growers with precise guidance on when and how cover crops can maximize both environmental benefits and economic returns.
Supported by the grant funding from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) – Office of Agricultural Water Policy directly addresses this need by generating field-based data and predictive models to quantify how cover crops affect soil-water balance, nutrient dynamics, and crop productivity over time.
This study is particularly important for Florida, where water quality and availability are vital to the state’s economy, environment, and agricultural sustainability. By generating new data to refine agricultural BMPs the project will help reduce nutrient losses, improve soil resilience, and enhance water conservation. The findings will directly support producers in adopting practices that increase productivity while protecting Florida’s natural resources, including its groundwater and surface water systems.
Dr. Vivek Sharma’s selection for the Florida Section ASABE Distinguished Achievement Award recognizes his sustained leadership, professional excellence, and deep commitment to the field of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. This honor is traditionally reserved for individuals who have represented the Agricultural Engineering profession with distinction beyond the state level. This accomplishment reflects the impact, innovation, and productivity of his research program. This achievement underscores Dr. Sharma’s leadership in advancing science-based solutions to critical agricultural and environmental challenges.
An active member of ASABE since 2010, Dr. Sharma has consistently contributed to the profession through research, extension, mentorship, and collaborative leadership. His dedication to advancing agricultural engineering, strengthening professional networks, and supporting the Florida Section makes him a fitting and deserving recipient of this distinguished award.
