SHIP Homebuyer Education Program

The Homebuyer Education Program is a 6-hour course designed to help you better understand the homebuying process, the financial responsibilities of home ownership, and basic home care and maintenance techniques to maintain the value of your home and save money on repairs. All SHIP and USDA Rural Development applicants must complete the course before they can receive program funds.

Topics include:

  • Analyzing your personal financial and credit situation
  • Pros and cons of homeownership
  • How much can I afford?
  • Working with housing professionals
  • House-hunting tips
  • Negotiating the contract
  • Choosing a mortgage
  • Understanding the closing process
  • Home ownership assistance programs
  • Preventing foreclosure
  • Home care and maintenance techniques

TO APPLY FOR SHIP FUNDS:

  • Complete the SHIP Homebuyer Education Class.

  • Get PRE-APPROVED for a mortgage loan by a lender.

  • Contact Garett Griffin (contact information, below) for a SHIP application AFTER you are pre-approved by a lender.

  • Complete and return the application to his office.

  • Mr. Griffin will process your SHIP application as you find your house, finalize the sales contract, and progress toward closing.
