Tax season has officially begun, and the UF/IFAS Extension Service is offering free tax prep assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program beginning this month in Wakulla and Franklin Counties.
There are five tax preparation days available through UF/IFAS Extension this tax season.
In Wakulla County, tax prep assistance is available on the following dates:
- February 14, 9:00am to 4:00pm
- March 14, 9:00am to 4:00pm
- April 11, 9:00am to 4:00pm
Appointments are held at the UF/IFAS Extension office in Crawfordville.
In Franklin County, tax prep assistance is available on the following dates:
- March 7, 9:00am to 4:00pm
- April 4, 9:00am to 4:00pm
Appointments are held at the Apalachicola Margaret Key Library in Apalachicola.
Assistance is available by appointment only. Appointment times are 90 minutes. Clients are required to bring all appropriate paperwork with them to the appointment. Appropriate paperwork includes:
- W-2 forms from all employers
- Any relevant Form 1099 income statements
- Any Form 1098 interest statements
- Official photo identification
- Social Security cards for both the filer and any dependents listed on the return
If the refund is to be directly deposited into a bank account, the client must also bring a blank check or savings account deposit slip to the appointment.
The VITA tax prep volunteers are located at the UF/IFAS Extension office in Leon County. They will communicate with clients in Wakulla and Franklin Counties over the computer in order to prepare their returns for the IRS. It is important to bring all relevant materials to the appointment to minimize delay. If any necessary paperwork is missing, the return cannot be completed.
